BFE - Large Shot Injection Assist Mold Mounted Extruder
The BFE was designed to increase the injection capacity for injection molding machines and to facilitate co-injection (skin-core) molding for large parts.
The BFE is mounted to the side or top of a mold. When the mold is clamped, the BFE uses it’s patented compact extruder to intrude plastic into the mold. Up to a 35 oz shot can be delivered in a unit that is less than 10ft long. An injection unit with similar capacity would be more than twice as long.
In a co-injection application, the BFE delivers the skin material into the mold using up to 8,000psi. After, typically, 40-60% volumetric fill of the cavity, the IMM injection unit pushes the lower cost, often recycled, material into the mold, under skin material.
The fountain flow characteristics of thermoplastics allows the core material to push through the center of the wall thickness displacing the first shot material. The displacement of the first shot through the center of the wall thickness continues the flow of the first shot until the mold is filled.
